Frame Hitches and Tail Twisters It is important to have the hinge point close to the tractor. If the hinge point is farther back, the grapple creates tail-swing. The worst grapples to turn are those that have the hinge point way back, on the grapple. The log must move sideways everytime the tractor turns, due to the tailswing, as shown in the drawing below. This can negatively influence the steering of the tractor.
Tail twisters do not turn as sharp as tractor grappels with hinges do, so the skid roads must be wider and there is risk for damage to residual trees. Frame Hinge The Valby SGR76 and SGR76-ML three-point hitch grapples have a hinge point close to the tractor, so the load will follow the tractor.
